Based on feedback from Tour Pros, the game's best-selling fairway woods have been re-energized. The most significant upgrade is the addition of the Modified X-Sole Design featured in X Hybrids. A slightly larger head size offers more stability and the slightly deeper face offers a larger effective hitting area.
It is definitely a winner in both balance and distance. Callaway Hyper X Fairway Wood is supremely well balanced w/just the stock shaft. Gone are the days of second guessing the flex on one of those old sub-par RCH shafts. The factory OEM is a Fuji, and the custom options are all the usual suspects and then some.
X-sole design provides a versatile turf interaction that helps cutting through rough (or thick) fairways or assists in smoothly gliding over tight fairways. It also lowers the leading edge of the fairway wood to help get the ball in the air more efficiently.
The new head shape is slightly larger to raise the Moment of Inertia (MOI) which is designed to appeal to a wider range of golfers. It now has a slightly deeper face that increases the effective hitting area and provides confidence at address.
It has a strategically positioned internal weighting system that provides a high Moment of Inertia for superior stability on miss-hits and also optimizes ball flight trajectories from the fairway or the tee.
Usually people think of working the ball only w/their driver, and or mid irons and wedges. Fairway Metals make the perfect long distance power fades when hit correctly. (They also make for a killer strong draw too, but I'm still trying to get out of the habit of over-cooking mine.) This club is great for that. It allowed me the opportunity to smash a 225 yd. power fade into a par 5 green on my second shot. Of course "Bozo" here missed the eagle putt, but I did get a birdie. This club was instrumental in making that possible. I hated to have to give it back. Then again, mine came back out of the shop and remains in my bag.
This is the first Callaway Fairway metal to impress me since the days of the old "Steel Head." It is hot, well balanced, workable, somewhat forgiving, and drop dead gorgeous. She is not a beginner's club by any stretch, but anyone who has a semi-repeatable swing will fall in love with her. She's one a mid capper could grow with through scratch status. Scratch players may want to try the tour version of this club.
Golfers' review:
I purchased the 5 wood 18°, regular shaft about 10days ago. I tried it out on the driving range first, bought it and now I am using it a lot on the course. Very nice ball flight, slight fade, medium height. The shaft is very good, rather stiff for a regular shaft. Although I seldom miss a shot and the misses are still acceptable, my impression is that it is not as forgiving as a Callaway Diablo. Distance (I am a medium hitter) is some 180 to 190 meters of which 160 tot 170 in the air.
Wow this baby is a rocket! I have played the Callaway Hyper X 15* with an Epic Tour Issue Fairway for a few rounds and can say nothing but great things. Very easy to flight the way I wanted and can move it in both directions with ease. No problems off the deck and its a dream off the tee. IMO the regular head looks better than the Tour head. The deeper head looks good to me. I took the advice of a few of my "Tour Van Friends" and shaved a little of the paint off the toe topline and it actually looks open at address. Very appealing. This one is the real deal. Give it a try and you won’t be sorry.
I have the Hyper X tour model and I absolutely love it. It's my favorite club in the bag now. My previous set up was an X-tour 4 wood with an aldila nv65 stiff and I didn’t hit it very high. The Hyper X that I have now I can blast off the deck. I really also like the head being a little deeper.
The Epic fairway shaft is an absolute freak when it comes to accuracy and workability.
